9. Create a tile fixture If you have the budget and expertise, a tile feature can really bring a bathroom to life. Try mix and matching different colours of the same tile. A popular idea at the moment is to use vertical stripes of coloured tiles behind the shower, toilet or basin. CosT: Fusion Gloss ceramic tile, pounds 1.27 per tile, 10 colours available (www.toppstiles.co.uk, 0800 023 4703).
10. Update the flooring Most bathrooms are quite small on floor space, so updating the existing flooring can be reasonably cheap. Try vinyl flooring... or there are now laminates suitable for bathrooms. If your existing floor is wood, you can also sand and paint it for a cheaper option.
CosT: Quickstep Natural varnished Oak Shipdeck flooring, pounds 33.99 per square metre (www.quick-step.com).
1. Paint the walls One of the quickest and simplest ways to transform a room is to spend a morning or afternoon painting. Look out for paints suitable for a humid bathroom environment, such as Crown kitchen and bathroom. And if your walls are slightly uneven, try using panelling to disguise the imperfections. Cost: Crown kitchen and bathroom paint in lola plum and soft duck egg, pounds 21.48 per 2.5 litres (www.crownpaint.co.uk, 01254 704951). EASIpanel raised and fielded design, pounds 8.99 per 3ft panel, pounds 10.99 per 5ft panel (www.easipanel.co.uk, 0115 911 3500).
2. Paper a feature wall Creating a feature wall will make the biggest difference to your bathroom. There are many choices depending on your budget and level of skill, but one thing to make sure of is that you paper the wall furthest away from your bath or shower.
Cost: Arthouse Disco Wallpaper, pounds 9.99 per roll (www.arthouse.com, 01706 239600) or try a specialist bathroom paper such as the Contour range (www.grahamandbrown.com, 0800 328 8452).
3. Details Revamping what you already have, investing in a quick fix or relatively inexpensive accessory, can change the look of your bathroom far more than you might think. It could be a new shower curtain or a fluffy bath mat - or even a designer light-pull cord in a bright metallic colour. Minor changes can make a world of difference.
Cost: Block Designer light pull, pounds 9.99 each (www.funkyolive.co.uk, 0118 988 7330).
4. New blind One of the simplest updates - and a great way to add colour to a plain bathroom - is a new window blind. Not all fabrics are suitable for bathrooms because of moisture and mould, so stick with metal or wood.
Cost: Concept metal Venetian blind in Vermillion, from pounds 22 for a 60cm by 60cm made-to-measure blind (www.tuiss.co.uk, 0800 862 0466).
5. Revamp your bath If you have a traditional-style old bath or have your eye on a reclaimed one, you may be able to repaint the outside. This Cook and Lewis Duchess roll-top bath (pounds 1,400) has been painted in a duck-egg blue to create a classic and timeless look.
paint in duck egg, pounds 14.98 per 750ml both B&Q (www.diy.com, 0845 850 0175).
6. Repaint Don't just think about the main furniture when you're revamping the bathroom... you may have a chair, stool or storage unit which can be painted to create a new colour scheme. And panels around the room can also benefit from the same treatment.
Cost: International Japlac paint in various bright colours, pounds 8.99 for 400ml (www.international-paints.co.uk, 0844 770 9444).
7. Add new taps This isn't a cheap option but new taps produce big results and instantly make any basin or bath look new again.
Cost: Deva Insignia basin taps, pounds 107.53 with a 12-year parts guarantee (www.deva.org.uk, 0800 195 1602).
8. Paint old tiles Tiles are expensive to replace, so you might want to think about painting over them instead using a product such as International one-coat tile paint. Another quick solution is to make the tiles look as good as new by giving them a good clean before using a grout pen, which will bring your existing, stained and ageing grout back to life.
Cost: International One Coat Tile Paint, shown here in serene green, pounds 17.99 per 750ml. International Grout Pen, pounds 3.99 (www.international-paints.co.uk, 0844 770 9444).

Pasting tiles on wall is not difficult but finishing is very important. I've seen some bathrooms whose complete look has changed due to bad cutting of tiles. Cutting of tiles with proper equipment is very important.
